10 Tips for Relaxing at Home

For busy people, relaxing at home is essential to wind down after a hard day. However, there’s a difference between relaxing and mindlessly scrolling on your mobile phone! People need to be more mindful, even when relaxing! Using these 10 tips for relaxing at home can help you to get better quality relaxation time and feel better overall.

Turn Off Your Mobile Phone

One of the biggest tips for relaxing at home is to turn off your mobile phone. The mobile phone is probably the number one distraction in life today. With the sheer amount of apps and ways to stay in contact, we never have our faces out of a screen for very long.

At the very least, keep your phone out of reach so that you aren’t tempted to look at it mindlessly. I know many of you will just sit there and refresh your Facebook feed like a zombie (we’ve all done it)!

Turn Down the Lights

Turning down the lights gives the body a signal. It tells us that it’s time to relax. Consider turning them down to a lower level so they’re not so bright, and maybe even light some candles to set a relaxing atmosphere.

Take a Long Bath

When it comes to tips for relaxing at home, there’s nothing more relaxing than a long, hot bath. If you’re aching or want to detox, you can use bath salts to help. If you get bored in the bath, consider playing some music in there or watching Netflix on your tablet/laptop. Just don’t get it wet!

Read a Book

Next up on our list of tips for relaxing at home is to lose yourself in a good book. Reading really is one of the best ways to relax. It stops us from over thinking, as it gives us something else to concentrate on. It can help us to develop skills, and look at things differently. It’s a great way to grow and develop as a person.

Watch a Film

Watching a film can be a great way to relax, providing you’re not getting distracted every few minutes by your phone. New television technology means you don’t need to rent a film or buy a DVD. So sit back and get comfy in your favorite chair, bonus points for a massage chair from Human Touch, and lose yourself for a few hours in a favorite movie. DVD!

Don’t Be Tempted to Check Your Emails

Another great tip for relaxing at home is to leave work where it belongs: at work. If you have a busy job, it can be tempting to check your emails every 5 minutes. Don’t be tempted. This is your time to relax, so you need to leave work at work.

Indulge in a Hobby

Indulging in a hobby is the next of our tips for relaxing at home. If you have a hobby that makes you happy, go ahead and spend time doing it! You might love painting, playing an instrument, going to the gym…they can all help you to wind down and relax!

Be Mindful of Your Breathing & Meditation

This is a really simple technique that works wonders when it comes to tips for relaxing at home: mindful breathing. If you’re feeling particularly stressed, taking some nice deep breaths can help you to really relax.

Meditation is similar to mindful breathing, but you need to set aside 20-30 minutes each day to clear your mind. It takes a little practice, but it has so many benefits!

Massage

Massage is another key way (and one of my personal favorite tips for relaxing at home) to relax and unwind. Massage has been used for centuries to help people relax and rejuvenate whether it’s through a masseuse or massage items such as a massage chair. A twenty-minute session combined with deep breathing can work wonders when it comes to ways to relax.

List the Things You’re Happy About

If you feel like you’ve had a bad day and it’s stressing you out, list the things you’re happy about. List the achievements you’ve made, and good things that have happened that day. Try to write down at least 3. You should feel a lot better about whatever has gone ‘wrong’.

I always turn down the lights! My husband laughs at me - but I tell him it's good for relaxing after a long day. It definitely helps me unwind. I should get better about the phone thing (need to turn it off) and I'm always compelled to check my emails. Good tips!
