6 Ways to Control Litter Box Odor #FreshStepFebreze

Love it? Pls Share it!

Two weeks ago today, our fur baby family increased by three! Now we are a family of 6 cats, and that daily battle against litter box odor, could easily become a full-fledged war! Luckily I have a several tricks in my arsenal that keep my house smelling fresh and clean. In fact, many people who come over are surprised to learn that we even have cats. They often comment on how they can’t smell the cat litter boxes at all. Want to know how I do it? Check out my six ways to control litter box odor!

6 Ways to Control Litter Box Odor

1. Scoop the box at least once a day. Regardless of how many cats you have, whether it’s one or 6, scooping the litter box at least once a day is the number one way to keep your home from smelling like a cat litter box. Plus, cats really prefer to go in a clean box, and who can blame them?!

2. Replace the litter at least once a week. In addition to scooping daily, changing the litter once a week will work wonders. No matter how many times a day you scoop, you are bound to miss some. And even a tiny bit will get smelly over time. Once a week, dump out the old litter, wash the box with a mild soap and warm water (avoid toxic cleaners and ammonia-based cleaners), dry it completely, and put fresh litter in.

3. Replace the litter box once a year. While this may sound like it’s taking things a bit too far, it’s really not. Over time your cat’s claws and the scooper make small nicks and scratches in the bottoms and sides of the litter box. These tend to hold odor and are hard to clean. Replacing the box yearly is a sure-fire way of preventing this. And when looking for a new box, make sure it has high sides (we all know cats have trouble keeping their rear end from hanging over the edge of the box) and a shiny, protective coating on it in order to keep odors from seeping into the plastic.

4. Keep the litter box in a well-ventilated area. While it is tempting to hide the litter box in a small, dark, out-of-the way room, it’s not a good idea. All it does is allow odors to hang around in that small space, and there’s a good chance your kitty will not be too happy about the location. And if kitty isn’t happy about where his litter box is located, he may just look for a better place to go! Keep the litter box in a well-ventilated spot where odors can easily disperse, and there is plenty of space for your cat to get in, move around comfortably, and come out.

5. Proper cat-to-litter box ratio. According to many pet experts, you should have one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Some cats do not like sharing and this rule allows them each to have their own. Plus if one box is in use or too close to the big scary vacuum cleaner monster, there’s another one available.

6. Use a quality brand of litter. No matter how many litter boxes you have and how clean you keep them, if you don’t use a good quality litter, then your odor problems are bound to continue. Find a high quality litter that provides odor control, and that your cat likes.

Control Litter Box Odor: Fresh Step® with the power of Febreze™

Our fur babies (and myself) prefer a clumping litter. In my opinion, scoopable litters are much better at odor control than clay litters, plus they make it easier to keep the litter box clean. Speaking of a quality scoopable litter, Fresh Step just released their latest formula, Fresh Step® with the Power of Febreze™! And since our litter needs just increased, what better time to head to PetSmart and pick up a couple of boxes of the new litter.

The new Fresh Step with the power of Febreze offers several features I was excited to try! First of all, unlike other scented litters that just mask odors, Fresh Step with the power of Febreze actually eliminates odors for 10 days, GUARANTEED! In addition, ClumpLock® Technology locks in liquid and odor on contact. This not only helps control litter box odor, but it forms tight clumps that don’t come apart, so scooping is so much easier! Last, but not least, this new litter is a lower dust formula than their previous formulas, and this means less tracking, clearer air, and cleaner surfaces.

There are several different varieties of the new Fresh Step with the power of Febreze, including Lightweight Extreme Cat Litter, Multi-Cat Litter and Extreme Cat Litter. We decided to go with the Extreme since we will soon have 3 more litter box users.

Knowing that cats are sensitive to changes in their litter, I gradually added some of the new litter to their old, so that by the time the weekly box change came around, I was able to refill their boxes with the new Fresh Step with the power of Febreze only. Sure enough, there was much less dust than other litters!

The cats have been using their new litter for a couples of weeks now, and not only do they seem to like it, I love it! When scooping the litter, I no longer have to deal with clumps that break apart into tiny little pieces that slide right through the slots on the scoop! And as far as the 10 day odor control guarantee, it really does work! Oh and speaking of odor control, you know how some scented litters have way too much scent? The new Fresh Step with the power of Febreze is just lightly scented, so the only time I really notice it is right after a cat uses the box.  If you are looking for a quality litter for your cats, I definitely recommend heading to your local PetSmart and giving the new Fresh Step with the power of Febreze a try! And remember to use the tips above to help control litter box odor!
