It’s something we all dread as parents, and it’s something hardwired into us. If a life or death situation ever happens to our loved ones or us, the stress alone can send us into a massive state of panic, and in a situation where every second is vital, we need to be in control of our emotions. And that is a tough thing to do when it’s someone you love. In fact, it’s part of our biology going back to when we were cave people. When we were faced with something like a bear attack, our body pumps a stress hormone called cortisol through our system, which gives us the energy to run away. You might have heard of the fight or flight syndrome. But in the modern world, we can’t run away from these situations, not when someone we love needs us and needs us to remain focused! We will never know when these situations arise, but there are things we can do every day to make sure our bodies are in the right state.

Mindfulness is a very popular term now, and the healthy benefits are many. From reduced blood pressure to an increased amount of focus, these are things you need when you’re under pressure. There are so many ways to keep a sense of focus and calmness, and you have to practice every day, and for some people, you can meditate, or you can just learn how to sit with your thoughts and breathe properly. Oxygen is something we don’t take in when we stress, because if we panic we take short breaths and that doesn’t help us to calm down in an emergency. If you look at a doctor in these types of situations, they are very aware of their surroundings, and they are very methodical in an emergency, and they breathe slow and calmly. You may think this is because they’ve been through this a million times before, and you’d be right, but there was a time when they realized they had to learn to control their panic button because they wouldn’t be able to do their job properly. It is something you can really benefit from, and when faced with this type of situation, it is much more beneficial for you to remain calm. If you need to call the emergency services, they will ask for vital information and will need to remain as calm as possible to get all of the important information. If an emergency air ambulance is needed, you will need to relay the relevant information to the medical professionals. And if you stay calm, it means you can tell them everything, and it can save that person’s life.

What ways are there to practice remaining calm? Look online for the Wim Hof Method, which is all about increasing the amount of oxygen into your body and so it can calm your nervous system over time. There is also something that Navy Seals do that is called Box Breathing, which they use to calm themselves down prior to a mission. Finding ways to remain calm will give you better control over an emergency situation and so you can act quickly.
