Many years ago, gloves were a must-have item when driving. Hence the glove compartment. Over the years, despite the fact that gloves are no longer a must-have driving accessory, the glove compartment remained. Lucky for us, too, as these compartments are handy places to store several useful items. Here are 8 items you should keep in your car’s glove compartment:

1. Medical Information

Write down any and all medical conditions, allergies and medications for all member of your family. If you are ever in an accident and unable to speak for yourself, this information will be easily accessible.

2. Emergency contact numbers

While practically everybody has their emergency contact numbers stored in their phone, you should still make a list of all emergency contacts and keep it in your glove compartment. This way, if you lose your phone, or if it breaks or gets stolen, you still have the numbers where you can easily find them.

3. Flashlight

Emergencies can happen at any time. Keeping a flashlight and new batteries in the glove compartment can come in handy in case of an emergency at night. It also wouldn’t hurt to keep a set of spare batteries in there, too.

4. Pen and Paper

Another of the items you should keep in your car’s glove compartment is a pen and paper.  You never know when you might need one. Having one in mine has helped me many times when I’ve forgotten to make my grocery list before leaving the house. Plus, if you are ever in an accident and need to exchange information, you will have them on hand.

5. Proof of insurance

Having proof of insurance is the law in almost every state now. The glove compartment is the best place to store this information. Just remember to keep the car’s title at home, and keep the registration in your wallet – never leave these items in the car.

6. Spare Phone Charger

It never hurts to keep an extra phone charger in your car in case of an emergency. The glove compartment is an ideal spot to store it out of the way, yet keep it within easy reach.

7. Tire Gauge

One of the most important parts of regular car maintenance is taking care of your tires. Having a tire gauge can help you ensure your tires always have the proper amount of air pressure. It also saves frustration when you go to put air in your in tires and the gauge on the air pump won’t work!

8. Owner’s manual and maintenance schedule

Having easy access to your owner’s manual and maintenance schedule can really come in handy. Especially when you are trying to figure out what those weird symbols on the dash mean. And remember, keeping up with the recommended maintenance schedule is the best way to keep your car in top shape!
