Stranded on Alabama’s Roads: A Call for Help

January 28, 2014

What started as a forecast for a light dusting of snow has turned into a nightmare for many in Birmingham, Alabama. The snow came fast and it came hard – and then it flash froze. Schools dismissed, places of work closed  – but not in enough time.  Everyone quickly hit the roads to head home this morning, not knowing that the majority of them would still be stuck in their cars at 10:00 at night with temps reaching 9° F.

Tonight, hundreds, if not thousands, of drivers are literally stuck on Birmingham streets and interstates, unable to navigate the icy hills and curves that define our network of roads. Southern Hospitality has kicked in with several shelters and stores opening their doors, and many people have even opened their homes to others they do not know, but there are still all of those drivers stuck outside, unable to abandon their cars and walk to shelter either because they are not within walking distance or they are not familiar with the area. Hundreds of drivers stuck in their cars, quickly running out of gas and being left to sit in the freezing cold.

If you are reading this, I beg of you, if you live in or near Birmingham, Alabama, and you can drive the roads in an ATV or 4×4 safely, please help. If you cannot, then please share the following links with everyone you know.  It is rapidly colder outside. Those stranded drivers have no food, blankets, water or gas. Please, visit the links below, and try to find a way to help.

And if you do not live here, or, like me, live too far away from the highways and interstates to help, or if you cannot get out from where you are, then please pray for all the men, women, children and elderly still stuck out there since early this morning.

God Bless…
