Tatcha: A Geisha’s Secret

Beauty in Balance: Tatcha

A Geisha’s beauty is ageless. Pale, porcelain, flawless skin, even when her make up is removed.  Some of the world’s greatest beauty secrets began with the geisha’s routine, secrets that were thought to be lost over the years of passing the traditions across the generations by word of mouth.

That is until Tatcha rediscovered a 200 year old manuscript from Japan’s Edo Period. Working closely with teams of scientists, scholars and even geisha’s themselves, Tatcha has learned the rituals and ingredients of the geisha’s skin care routine, and has created a skin care line that brings the secrets of the geisha’s beauty directly to you.

The science behind Tatcha is based solely on replenishing and enhancing the skin’s natural defense system against the harmful effects of the environment.  Tatcha has created a formula using 3 bioactive ingredients blended together into an anti-aging complex, known as Hadasei 3:

Green Tea Complete DNA Extract – extremely rich in EGCG, more potent than green tea extracts and Vitamin C, this is extremely effective in protecting against UV-induced damage, which is a leading contributor to premature aging.

Okinawa Red Algae Extract – a great source of a natural polysaccharide called Beterhelin, which is proven to help the skin’s function as a barrier and extend the time moisture is retained in the skin, which in turn improves the texture

Japanese Rice Bran Extract – contains the powerful anti-oxidant inositol, known as both a powerful antioxidant and nourishing moisturizer.

Tatcha’s belief?  “Beauty in Balance”

Using their Hadasei 3, Tatcha has created a timeless skincare line that is free of mineral oils, synthetic fragrances, parabens, urea, DEA, PEGs, phthalates and other non-natural, harmful chemicals and additives.  Their formulas are dermatologist-tested, non-irritating and non-sensitizing, just pure and natural products that will leave your skin soft, smooth and supple.

Just like the time-honored ritual of the geisha, Tatcha’s skincare ritual consists of 4 basic sacraments: cleansing, massaging, nourishing and protecting the skin. Their regimen is suitable for all ages and ethnicities, but especially those with combination skin who are wanting to prevent and repair.  They do offer a regimen for all three skin types: dry skin, normal-combination and oily.

I was graced with the opportunity to try their ritual for normal-combination skin.  This ritual consists of six elements or steps (the product line comes with 6 products).

Pure Camellia Cleansing Oil – you use this on dry, unwashed skin. Just put a few drops on your fingertips, and gently massage in a circular motion over your entire face.  Rinse with warm water.  This is especially good for removing make- up, and dry, red skin.

I was a little hesitant at first about covering my face with this oil that smelled wonderfully of Camilla flowers, afraid it would break my face out.  I need not have worried!  This oil gently cleansed and hydrated my skin, even helping to reduce the red areas around the sides of my nose from dry, damaged skin.

Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder– these powders are available in 3 formulations, gentle, classic and deep.  They are the enzyme powder of rice bran, papaya and Tatcha’s Hadasei 3 Complex which are activated by water and gently exfoliates skin to reveal the clean, healthy skin beneath.

This was the first time I had ever used anything like this.  You pour about a teaspoon-full into your palm, add a little bit of water, then rub onto your face in a gentle circular motion.  I was surprised to feel this powder quickly turn into a sudsy, foamy wash, and amazed at how it instantly and completely rinses off, leaving my skin squeaky clean and so very smooth.  It has a very interesting, powdery scent.

Keep in mind this is meant to cleanse make-up free skin, not as a make up remover, that is what the Camellia Oil is for.

Radiant Deep Brightening Serum – this is a time-tested formula of Asian botanicals and Tatcha’s Hedasei-3 complex meant to hydrate the skin while at the same time making it more luminous.  It is a milky-white serum of which you only need a few drops.  Gently massage into skin with a light, circular motion and allow to dry.  Do not rinse it off.  This left my skin moist and glowing, radiant.

Supple, Moisture Rich Silk Cream – my personal favorite!  This is an anti-aging moisturizer that is made from liquid silk, squalane, royal jelly and the Hadasei-3 complex.  It is extremely light feeling since it is made without any heavy oils.  It only takes a little bit to cover your entire face. My skin has never felt so moisturized and soft.

Aburatorigami Japanese Blotting Papers – these are all natural blotting papers which you use to absorb extra oil without messing up your make-up.  Simple remove a leaflet and gently blot the oily areas on your face.  They really work without smearing or removing any make up.  I use them often in the hot Southern summers!

Evening Aburatorigami Japanese Blotting Papers – these are the same papers as above, just available in a smaller size to fit in your clutch or purse.

This is just a sample of the many wonderful products offered by Tatcha. To see their full line, click HERE or visit their website at https://www.tatcha.com/. This line has quickly become one of my favorite skin care routines, literally leaving my skin clean, soft and supple.

I could tell a difference within the first week of use, and after several weeks, I love the amazing results!
