Prosthodontists
Prosthodontists are dental specialists who have received additional extensive training that focuses on tooth replacement and tooth restoration. After graduating from dental school, they undergo three to four more years of training in an ADA (American Dental Association) recognized program in order to learn the ins and outs of cosmetic dentistry.
In addition to training in special dental procedures, prosthodontists also have to study about dental biomaterials, ceramics, and information regarding color and how it affects aesthetics.
A prosthodontist learns how to provide a variety of services including:
- oral surgery, dentures, aligning the jaw correctly, fixing crooked teeth,
- how to fix veneers, crowns, and bridges to restore and replace teeth,
- how to perform jaw treatments for problems such as temporomandibular disorders (TMJ or TMD), and other problems caused by snoring or sleep apnea,
- as well as many other advanced procedures.
Prosthodontists are also one of just nine American Dental Association (ADA)-recognized dental specialties.
Cosmetic Dentists
Cosmetic dentists, on the other hand, are general dentists who have taken additional courses to learn various cosmetic dental procedures. They mostly deal with repairing teeth and ensuring that they remain healthy. They have also trained extensively in the usage of dental materials to help create the best possible smile for an individual.
A cosmetic dentist usually specializes in services such as:
- cleanings
- repairing and preventing cavities,
- and teeth whitening procedures,
- and more

Regardless of the differences, prosthodontists and cosmetic dentists have the same ultimate goal: to give their patients a beautiful, healthy smile.
