You don’t have to see a leak to know it’s there

Did you know that just because you can’t see a leak, that doesn’t mean you don’t have one? The best way to determine if you have a leak in your home is to turn off all the water inside your home so that there is nothing flowing and then look at your water meter. If your water meter shows that water is actively flowing, this means that somewhere in your home there’s a leak.

To monitor your water usage and spot leaks faster, you could consider using a smart water monitor like Bluebot.

Once you know that there’s a leak, the next step is to find it. To do this, turn off your water completely using the main valve and then check your meter again. If the water has stopped flowing then the leak is inside the house. However, if it’s still showing that the water is flowing, it’s a leak somewhere outside of your house.

Find the leak and determine the cause

To determine the cause of the leak, you need to work out where the water is coming from. You may be able to see the leak, or you may have accidently caused the leak yourself when doing a DIY project, in which case you will already know where it is coming from.

However, if you can’t work out what the cause could be, you need to find it or call in an expert who can. Plumbers are able to quickly and easily locate leaks, so if you’re struggling, it’s best to call one in.

Some leaks are easy to stop – it can just be a case of tightening a valve up. Others, aren’t so easy to stop and can lead to serious water damage if you don’t find a local plumber who are able to come and see to the problem.

Whatever you do, don’t leave it

Regardless of the size of the leak, don’t make the mistake of leaving it. It doesn’t matter if you can only see a small amount of water leaking, there may be more damage going on than what you can see.

The water could be dripping onto the electrical wires; it could be causing damage to the floor – you just don’t know, so it’s important to have a leak of any size dealt with, to ensure that it doesn’t cause more serious problems. Don’t hold off on calling in a plumber, get expert help as soon as you can.

Final Thoughts on What to Do if You’ve Sprung a Leak

Whether you’ve caused a leak by trying to plumb in a new kitchen sink or leaned on a radiator a little too hard and now water is gushing out of it, you need to get the problem dealt with as soon as possible. As leaks can lead to all sorts of damage.
