Review and Giveaway!

Have you ever had one of those perfectly cooked delicious steaks where the outside is slightly charred and the inside is so moist and delectable?  Now there is a way to get that same taste in the comfort of your own kitchen, even without using a grill!  Char Crust Dry Rub Seasonings! Chicago, 1957, Al Farber’s Steak House was a place of legendary seasoned steaks, lightly charred on the outside, while juicy and delectable on the inside.

After closing in 1977, the family continued to sell their two original special blended dry rubs for which they had become so well known, the Original Hickory Grilled (originally just called Char Crust) and the Roto Rub.  By 1998, the original owner’s son and his new wife, after much prompting, introduced their Char Crust retail line including both the original rubs as well as an three additional flavors.

Today Char Crust is sold nationwide and has become a huge hit.  They now offer 10 fabulous flavors including Hickory & Molasses, Sun Dried Tomato & Garlic, Amazin Cajun and many more!  Yet despite their success, they still stick to the original way of making their rubs in small batches at a time, using only the freshest herbs and spices.  Char Crust generously let me pick out two rubs to review.  After much deliberation, I decided to try the Teriyaki Ginger and the Original Hickory Grilled.

Teriyaki Ginger

What They Say:  The taste of sweet teriyaki with fragrant shoga (ginger). Great on shrimp, chicken and steak.

What I Say:  This has the most incredible taste!  It was not too sweet, nor did it have too much of a bite of ginger.  I used it on pork chops and vegetables.

Teriyaki Pork Chops

Original Hickory Grill

What They Say:  Rich hickory grilled flavor, enhances the meat’s natural flavor without overwhelming.  Also great on chicken, tuna steaks and veggies.

What I Say:  The perfect blend of hickory and salt, the smell is enough to make your mouth water!  I used it on chicken and pork chops, next will be steak!

Original Hickory Grilled on Chicken Breasts

Char Crust was extremely easy to use! I just poured some of the rub in a bowl and dredged the meat through it on both sides. Then I lightly drizzled olive oil on top to prevent the spices from burning. I choose to broil the meat under the broiler, and while it was cooking, I flipped it from side to side a few times until it was cooked all the way through.

The smell was incredible while it cooked, and had my husband and son asking when it would be done! The first time I cooked with it, I had to laugh when my son asked why I had burned it so badly! The rub cooks to where it literally looks like a ‘charred-crust’, so I can see why he thought it was burned!  However, the crust has absolutely no burned taste at all, and the meat inside is so moist and juicy! Each bite was fantastic!

Using Char Crust to flavor vegetables is also a cinch!  I choose to use the Teriyaki flavor with a blend of Asian-type frozen vegetables including water chestnuts, broccoli, red bell pepper, snow peas and more.

Once the veggies were thawed, I put them in a bowl, drizzled a bit of Olive Oil over them, then sprinkled with Char Crust and tossed to blend.  I then put them onto a foil lined cookie sheet, set the oven to 425 degrees and baked them for about 10 to 12 minutes until they were cooked through.  The result?  An incredibly delicious Teriyaki-flavored side dish!

I definitely recommend Char Crust!  It is so easy to use and there are many different ways you can use it too!  You can bake, broil or grill both meats and vegetables for a menu full of fantastic, flavored foods!  Char Crust can be purchased in 4-ounce boxes for $5.49 each.

You can order Char Crust directly through the website or use their store locator to find a retailer near you.  They also have a section on their site where you can find a great selection of
delectable recipes!
