When you move into a new house, there’s so much to do that getting started can feel overwhelming. Here are three easy steps to getting settled in your new house as quickly and painlessly as possible.
1. Unload
The first step in getting settled in your new house is to get all of your belongings to their final destinations – and that means to a specific room in your house. If you worked with a professional moving company, it’s likely that the movers will unload all of your boxes into the appropriate rooms and will reassemble any furniture that had to be dissembled for transport.
2. Unpack
Once your boxes are in their designated rooms, it’s time to unpack them. ALL of them. Unpacking everything in your boxes right
away may feel like it’s only adding to the clutter since many things will likely wind up on the floor while you find their rightful places in bookcases, shelves, and drawers. However, doing one big unpacking job up front will ultimately help you get fully settled more quickly. Putting things away as you unpack means you’ll probably have to rearrange as new items come out, which adds a lot of unnecessary work – and leaves you less time to get to those final two boxes. The sight of all your belongings on the floor is a strong motivator to get everything put away as soon as possible. After all, you can’t put away what you can’t see!
3. Decorate
You may be tempted to leave decorating to the very end since pictures on the wall won’t make your new house more livable. But they will make it feel more like exactly what it is: your new home. Hanging art and photos can have a dramatic effect on the coziness and warmth of your space, and what’s on the walls may even influence the layout of your furniture and belongings – so it makes sense to get decorating right away. You can also think beyond the traditional fireplace mantle line-up. There are tons of unique ways to display family photos, from gallery walls to floor-to-ceiling displays. Now is your chance to get creative!
Moving is a lot of work, but if you stay organized and focused, you’ll be getting settled in your new house in no time.
