“Earth’s Greenest Bag”, Literally!

Many of my regular readers know that I am on a quest to begin living as Green as possible.  By using eco-friendly cleansers, re-cycling and re-using items that I normally would have thrown away, my family and I are making new strides everyday, but I am always looking for more ideas and products.  When looking on the web one day I came across a beautiful, eco-friendly bag properly named the Nature Bag.

The Nature Bag is a reusable bag that is entirely unique and stylish in its structure.  Sure, there are plenty of eco-friendly, reusable bags around, but this is the first of its kind I have seen.  Many items today are hand made or hand cut or hand dyed, but few are actually HOME made, Nature Bag, however, is!

Handmade in Laos from tropical kudzu known as JungleVine® cord, this bag has been perfected over thousands of years of use by the Khmu who live in the Northern part of Laos, a country with one of the lowest per person incomes in the world.

The Khmu make these bags from their homes allowing them to be able to care for their children at home and so much more.  The Nature Bag is actually the economic foundation of a project known as the Nature Bag Khmu/Lao Poverty Reduction Project which seeks to link the Khmu tribe with the rest of the world, and bring them out of some of the worst poverty known.

The Nature Bag is completely unique in its material, design and shape.  Though the material looks thin and flimsy, it is incredibly strong, durable and resilient!  The bag has many uses whether it be for groceries, the beach, school or everyday use!

It literally earns its motto of being Earth’s Greenest Bag™ for it is hand crafted from naturally growing vines that need no chemicals, no agriculture and no cultivation.  The vines are harvested by human hand, it is a vegan material, and no energy other than human energy is used in its creation so no fuel is consumed and no pollution is created.

Plus, it is 100% biodegradable so if you decide you no longer want it, you can bury it and it will completely biodegrade.

I recently had the opportunity to review a Nature Bag, in the Pahk style, and was quite impressed!  When I first opened the package and saw the material, I was in doubt as to its quality and durability.

The bag is made of what looks to be tons of thin threads woven together, and it is very lightweight.  You can see right through it, and the strap is just more of these strands of material.  Looking at the pictures, I am sure you can see why I was originally in doubt!

For a test I decided to take the recommendation on the included insert for conditioning a new bag.  I took 7 heavy books and put them in the bag then hung it over a doorknob, sure that the strap would immediately snap, or at the very least the bag itself would tear.  To my amazement, neither happened.

I even added two more books, and the bag remained in one piece without losing its shape or any other damage!  Needless to say, I was quite impressed!

The material is naturally elastic which not only allows the bag to stretch to different shapes and sizes, but the bag also “grasps” the items inside gently holding them in place.  The opening also has elasticity so it closes on its own, protecting the items inside from falling out.  If you need a bit more containment just tie the handles in a knot.

Since the day of the test, I have used my Nature Bag for many things ranging from a grocery bag to an overnight bag to a purse!  I love how it sits comfortably on my shoulder without slipping or sliding around; I don’t have to keep readjusting it regardless of how much weight is in it.

It is so versatile I can fold it up and stick it in my purse until I need it, I can tie the handle into a knot to keep items from falling out, I can put as much or as little in it as I want and the integrity of the bag is not altered in any way!  I have received endless questions and compliments on the bag, and am thoroughly enjoying it.

Caring for the Nature Bag is extremely simple as the material naturally resists dirt and stains.  It can be machine washed and dried, but be sure to take it from the dryer before it is completely dry and fill it to capacity with heavy objects then hang over a doorknob; this will help prevent shrinkage.

The only things you need to be extra careful with is not trying to put in an object that is larger than the opening, and try to avoid snags, aside from that, this bag is extremely durable!  For more detailed cleaning instructions and advice on what to do if you do snag a hole in your Nature Bag, check out the FAQ page on the website.

Nature Bag is available in a variety of sizes, styles and colors.   There are nine different styles offered: JungleBag, Beach, Sidh, Noy, Beng, Lehm, Ving, Muang, and the one I was sent, the Pahk.  Each one is available in different sizes ranging from Medium to Jumbo, as well as different strap sizes.

Prices vary from $15 to $75.  You can order the bags directly from the Nature Bag website, as well as through a selection of retailers a list of which you can find HERE.
