The Mother Company: The Friendship Show

You know that famous credo by Robert Fulghum, “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”? Well that saying is more true than many of us realize.  In fact, many of life’s most important lessons are those that focus on emotional and social learning – how to cope with anger, how to deal with sadness, how to make friends, how to share – and are learned mainly during the early childhood formative years (preschool age) and then reinforced through 2nd or 3rd grade and beyond.

Today, with both technology and media playing a huge part in our children’s lives – studies show that children ages 2 to 11 (those important formative years) are watching an average of 32 hours of television a week – a large part of their learning is coming from those shows!  Are you aware of what your children are watching and what values those shows may, or may not, be teaching them?

I recently had the opportunity to review a children’s show that was created by a group of moms who were concerned about the quality and content of today’s media (and what it is teaching children) and decided to do something about it.  These moms got together and formed The Mother Company, a group whose motto is “Helping Parents Raise Good People” with a community site where parents can find expert advice, parental wisdom and many tips and tools for “raising a healthy, safe and well-adjusted child”.  The Mother Company also created a new line of children’s entertainment products that focus on social and emotional learning called Ruby’s Studio!

The Ruby’s Studio line includes books, apps, videos and toys that help teach preschoolers and young children about social and emotional issues in a unique, fun and creative way.  So far two award-winning videos have been created that use positive role models to teach positive lessons. The first video in the Ruby’s Studio series, “The Feelings Show”, aims to help preschool-aged children learn to recognize, express and move through their feelings.

The second video in the series, and the one I had the opportunity to review, is titled “The Friendship Show.  This 41-minute-long program uses engaging animated skits, easy-to-make art projects and original, catchy songs to teach young children ages 2 to 7 all about creating healthy and lasting friendships.

Set in Ruby’s magical art studio, Ruby (Kelsey Collins) is visited by her four young friends. Together they discuss all there is to know about making and keeping friends including respecting differences, expressing appreciation and resolving conflict.  She even touches on bullying and how to cope with those type situations.  Throughout the show Ruby emphasizes the most important aspect of friendship, The Golden Rule.

The lessons are taught using adorable, animated characters who are involved in entertaining skits that focus on real-life situations.  Ruby then expands on those lessons with meaningful conversation, fun-to-sing songs and an art project that can easily be recreated at home. Throughout the entire video children are encouraged to think about what friendship means to them while learning important lessons that will be carried with them throughout their life.

Everything about The Friendship Show is cheerful and colorful and grabs a child’s attention right from the start. Ruby actively encourages participation from the children onscreen as well as the audience, interacting with the children in a respectable, down-to-earth, non-patronizing way.  Learning is made fun, and with cute characters, rhyming songs and even a bit of magic, children want to participate and watch the show over and over again.

Even my niece, who is at the bottom of the age recommendation, was captivated, smiling and laughing and trying to sing along.  The show also provides plenty of conversational cues and project ideas for parents to keep the conversation going with their children once the show concludes.

With school starting soon, the Friendship Show would be a perfect video for reminding the children of the value of friendship – and it is also a great video for a child who is going to school for the very first time!  “The Friendship Show” is available in both DVD and digital download formats.

If you purchase the DVD, there is an additional feature called Pop-Up Parenting™ where Author and parenting expert, Dr. Robyn Silverman, provides helpful tips and pointers for parents.

You can purchase Ruby’s Studio’s “The Friendship Show” either on DVD or through digital download directly through The Mother Company on the Shop Ruby’s Studio website Other Ruby’s Studio products such as books, music, apps, dolls and more can also be purchased through the site. “The Friendship Show” DVD can also be purchased through Amazon.com, as well as at your local Whole Foods.
