Signs Your Brakes Need Servicing That You Don’t Want to Ignore
Your car’s brake system is at the top of the list when it comes to car safety. And regular inspections by a certified mechanic are essential. While some of the signs that your brakes need servicing are obvious, such as the brake light coming on or it taking longer for you to come to a complete stop, other signs are not so obvious. Below are five warning signs your brakes need servicing, signs that just may help you put the brakes on being involved in a serious accident.

Puddles Under the Car
Brake fluid looks similar to fresh motor oil, but it has a less “slimy” texture. If you notice a small puddle of this fluid when the car is parked, it’s often a telltale sign of a brake fluid leak. Since the brake fluid is a vital component of your car’s braking system, any leaks should be inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
Unusual Noises
You know that high-pitched screeching sound you sometimes hear on cars? That is a built-in warning system to alert you that it is time to have your brake pads replaced. The only exception is if your brake pads are wet. If this is the case, the screeching or squealing will quickly fade away as you apply the brakes. However, your brakes are squealing on an ongoing basis, it is time to make an appointment with your mechanic.
Another noise you may hear is a loud, metallic grinding or growling noise. This is caused by the two pieces of metal (the disc and the caliper) rubbing together. If you hear this, it means that you have worn down the pads completely, most likely beyond replacement. Do not put off service any longer.
Pulling
If your vehicle pulls to one side while braking, take it to a mechanic and have your brakes inspected and serviced. This may indicate that the brake linings are wearing unevenly or that there is foreign matter in the brake fluid. You car may need a brake adjustment or to have the fluid drained and replaced.
Tempermental Pedal
Another of the warning signs your brakes need servicing is a tempermental brake pedal. If the brake pedal feels soft or mushy, if it sinks towards the floor, or if you have to apply more pressure than usual to come to a full stop, it’s a very good indication that something is wrong with your brake system. This can often be caused by an air leak or brake fluid leak, or even a problem with the master cylinder. Take it to a mechanic to have the problem diagnosed and repaired.
Vibration
While feeling a vibration or pulsation in the brake pedal when applying the brakes is sometimes an indication that your car is out of alignment, it could also be a sign that your rotors are warped. This vibration is similar to what you feel when your ABS or anti-lock brake system kicks in. Have it checked as soon as you can.
If it’s time to have your brakes serviced, don’t put it off. Find a certified mechanic, such as those at Waldorf Dodge, and make an appointment as soon as you can. Your safety depends on it.
