Encourage your teen’s DIY journey with these simple, fun tips to inspire creativity and hands-on learning. From beginner projects to building confidence, get them excited about DIY!
Teenage children are often hard to steer in life but when you’re giving them the right opportunities and being proactive as a parent, it’s only going to benefit your child or children in the future.
With your help and influence, there are plenty of opportunities in which you can help guide your children through life. While they might not want to do the things you’d planned for them to do, it’s always worthwhile to encourage them where you can.
How can you encourage your teen’s DIY journey? Whether it’s to take on as a hobby or to pursue as a career, here are some helpful ways in which you can inspire that creativity and intrigue. Keep it simple and avoid complex projects
Keep It Simple and Avoid Complex Projects
Starting off any DIY and crafts journey, you want to keep it fairly simple. Remember, your teenager will likely have little to no experience in DIY so trying to overcomplicate it with a hefty woodwork job is not the best direction to start in.
The basic steps are what will pique their interest and spark that all-important curiosity. It’s worth offering simple initiatives when introducing them to DIY so that they’re incentivized to complete the tasks and/or projects that they undertake.
Consider what tasks and projects you can begin with and draw on your own experience to find what will work for your teenage children to begin with. It might be worth giving them a few DIY kits to start them off and not overwhelm them too early on in the journey.
As your teenager learns more and more about DIY, they’ll naturally get better at their crafts. It’s going to help them navigate more complex projects and hopefully find more success with other projects as they build their skills.
Get involved with their efforts
While it might seem like the natural thing to step back and leave them to it, DIY is just like homework – they need guidance.
So instead of stepping back and letting them trial and error, get involved. With DIY, while it’s like homework, it requires a little more hands-on effort from you as the parent. There might be certain tools that require direction so that they don’t injure themselves on an oscillating saw for example.
Not only that but getting involved makes it fun for you as a parent. When you’re teaching your kids new things, it’s handy to enjoy what you’re teaching. It makes you a great role model for them and shows the importance of passion.
Try to be as proactive as possible in guiding and encouraging your child. They’ll make mistakes but that’s the beauty of learning.
Spark their exploration
Exploration within DIY is important because often enough, it’s all about overcoming obstacles that get put in their way. Often enough, a DIY project doesn’t always go to plan and usually, there are one or two steps within the process where you might not have as much knowledge on how to complete it as other steps.
With that being said, you should look at how they approach each DIY project and in what ways you could inspire that exploration that they need to be successful with this skill.
Once you spark that exploration, they’ll be better at troubleshooting the ebbs and flows of DIY. It’s a fun exploration and should be encouraged as being so. If your teenager gets stuck, guide them but encourage them to explore the options they have available and what might lead them to progress further down the DIY journey.
Give them personalized projects
The home offers a lot of opportunities for DIY. If you’re someone who enjoys updating and maintaining the home, then there are likely various opportunities available to get started.
As part of the home’s many projects, it’s worth involving your teenager in any one of them. You could always look to give them individual and personalized projects that they can make their own. That will help inspire creativity, as well as help them explore further. Not only that but by personalizing the projects, you also make it interesting.
It mixes engagement while fostering your teenager’s creative mind to create fantastic results in their DIY projects.
Showcase their crafts
It’s always a wonderful feeling to see your work being shown off to others. That’s the case with anything in life, personal or professional.
DIY should be shown off to anyone who is willing to engage in it and it’s something that you definitely want to provide for your teenagers. By showcasing their crafts, it helps to encourage them further. Even if the project itself is very basic, it’s not something that should be dismissed. Every successful or somewhat successful DIY project should be celebrated. It will only help to encourage them further and inspire them to get more creative with their future DIY projects.
Showcase their crafts by displaying them around the home. Show them off the friends, family members, and random strangers who’ll appreciate it.
Be patient and positive
Finally, it’s important and perhaps imperative that you’re being patient with your teenagers. Whenever they’re taking on a new skill or learning something new, patience is important. Don’t just skip ahead and do the work for them. They won’t learn anything from doing that. However, by being patient and positive with their efforts, they’ll get plenty out of it.
Focus on how you can be positive with your teenagers and learn to have patience. It’s hard to have patience nowadays, especially with the way the world is and how fast-paced it can be. Children can often be the reminder you need to slow down and focus on the now. Your teenagers will learn eventually, you just need to find that patience for their sake.
Teenagers exploring DIY will often turn out the be the most well-rounded adults. DIY skills are great to have so it’s definitely something to help your child out as they navigate their journey into adulthood.
