Get Rid of Musty Smells with These Three Tips
The most common reason why you might catch a whiff of a musty smell in your home is because of mold. Mold needs a dark space to thrive and a source of moisture, which is why you’ll often find mold growing inside your kitchen cabinets and in walls with leaky pipes. Once you find out what caused the smell and take care of the problem though, that odor may still linger around your home. In addition to repairing and replacing damaged areas of your home, you can use some simple methods to get rid of musty smells.
Put Out Charcoal and Baking Soda
Two of the best products for getting rid of musty odors are charcoal and baking soda. Both have natural properties that absorb odors from the surrounding air to help the air in your home smell both better and fresher. You’ll find activated charcoal available in most home improvement stores, and you can get baking soda from any grocery store. Fill bowls that have a wide opening with either the charcoal or the baking soda before placing in the areas of your home where the musty smell is the strongest.
Spray Scents
You can develop a problem called nose blindness, which occurs when your nose grows accustomed to the smells in your home. This keeps you from noticing the musty smell as well as the odors left behind by your cooking, family and pets. Using some simple spray products can give your home a fresher scent. Look for products that you can spray into the air or on fabric as well as deodorizers and neutralizers that gradually change the scent of your home. You can even spray women’s perfumes like those available from www.mygiftstop.com on your clothing and furniture to mask that scent.
Use Fresh Air
If you keep your home locked up tight with the windows closed every day of the year, you create the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. The lack of airflow in your home can also strengthen the musty smell that your nose picks up. A simple way to eliminate that smell is with some fresh air. Use fans in each room and in your windows to pull some of the bad air out of your home. Those fans will keep the fresh and clean air circulating around the rooms. With fresh air, the right products and some baking soda, you can freshen up even the mustiest of homes.
