2013 Holiday Gift Guide Suggestion

Who knew bugs could actually be considered fun? Hexbug, the popular autonomous micro-robotic creatures made by Innovation First, are so much fun, it’s hard not to watch!  These colorful bugs run on batteries, and there are many different species to collect such as ants, crabs, spiders, inchworms, larvae and more. There is also an entire line of smaller Hexbugs known as Hexbug Nano’s which are the smallest of the robotic creatures in the Hexbug lineup.

Now there is an even newer breed of the Hexbug Nano called Hexbug Nano v2. Their redesigned exoskelton and advanced technology gives these gravity- defying nanos the ability to climb vertically, horizontally, around corners, through loops and tubes, to the very top of any Nano v2 habitat set! Like all Hexbugs, the Hexbug Nano v2 is collectible, capable of flipping from its back to its feet, and moving surprisingly fast and behaving just like a real bug.

Some of you may remember the Hexbug Nano Zip Line Kit review I wrote last year as part of my Gift Guide; today, it is still one of my son’s favorite toys with which to play. This year, I was sent the new Hexbug Nano v2 Helix 180 to review, and not only does my son love it, but my husband and I do too!

It comes with one Extremely Rare Hexbug Nano V2 Mutant Specimen, and 40 pieces which require a small amount of assembly. It took my husband maybe 15 minutes to assemble the track, as each piece easily snaps to the next, and detailed instructions are included.

A battery is installed in the Hexbug, so once the track is together, it is playtime!  And although we haven’t yet done so, this set can be connected to other Hexbug Nano habitats to create a multi-level mega-set. However, this set is plenty of fun just by itself!

The Helix 180° kit has a multi-level track with five separate clear tubes for the Hexbug Nano to climb. The fifth tube has an extreme 90° vertical twist which I had doubts about the robotic bug being able to climb! However, just like living bugs, the Hexbug Nano V2 scuttles up and around the habitat with no problem! It is highly entertaining to watch!

With each Hexbug your child acquires, they can register it online and track their collection, play games and learn about real science!  And I have to say, that as a teacher and a mother, nothing beats learning while having fun!

I highly recommend the Hexbug Nano V2 Helix 180° kit for anyone looking for a fun, unique Holiday gift for a child!  This particular set is appropriate for ages 3 and up, since there are small pieces included.  You can find the Hexbug Nano habitat kits and the Hexbug Nano’s on the Hexbug Nano website, at many toy stores and mass merchandisers around the world, as well as at many other sites online.

The Hexbug Nano Helix 180° kit can also be purchased on Amazon. The fascinating Hexbug toys provide hours of fun and entertainment for children and adults alike!
