Rocky Mountain Popcorn

Popcorn, one of America’s favorite classic treats, is actually one of the more nutritious treats.  Did you know that popcorn is actually a whole grain snack, one that has, as a grain, more protein than any other whole grain?  That it contains more iron than spinach or eggs?  More phosphorus and fiber than baked chips or pretzels? And that it is high in antioxidants?

It’s amazing that something so healthy can taste so good!  What’s even more amazing, is the popcorn made by the Rocky Mountain Popcorn Company – part of Open Road Snacks!  I recently had the chance to try their popcorn in an incredible assortment of flavors, and now, I am hooked!

Rocky Mountain Popcorn: Taste The Rockies

Rocky Mountain Popcorn is based in Denver, Colorado and has been producing popcorn for over 20 years.  What started out as a popular local product, was in great demand nationwide by 2007.  Yet Rocky Mountain Popcorn not only tastes delicious and fresh, it is made only using the most natural products available.

You won’t find any corn syrup or partially hydrogenated anything in their popcorn.  Only the biggest, moistest and freshest kernels hot-air popped, and certified gluten-free.

They offer a great selection of flavors, many common and quite a few unique!  I found each flavor to be full of taste and each bag filled to the rim with light, fluffy kernels.   Here is a list of all the flavors, along with my personal description.

White Cheddar:

What they say: “Covered with just the right amount of tangy, real dairy cheddar cheese.”

What I say: this popcorn is covered in cheddar cheese with a slight salty kick.  Tastes very fresh and is incredibly good!

Caramel:

What they say: “Perfectly popped kernels covered in buttery caramel goodness.  Our caramel starts with brown sugar in a kettle, just like your grandma would make!”

What I say: WOW!  This one is definitely my favorite!  Large, light and fluffy kernels drenched in buttery-sweet caramel with a hint of salt.  The perfect salty-sweet  treat!  Not too sugary though!

Cinnamon Sugar:

What they say: “Cinnamon Sugar is our newest flavor that tastes like your mom’s cinnamon toast!”

What I say:  more of those light and fluffy kernels covered in a slightly sweet, cinnamon powder.  Not a common popcorn flavor, but surprisingly tasty!  Not too sweet and not too much of a cinnamon bite.

Kettle Corn:

What they say: “A perfect version of the American classic, kernels, perfectly coated with a fine balance of sugar and salt.”

What I say: tasty kernels with the perfect blend of sugar and salt.  The first taste you get is sweet then the salt kicks in to blend perfectly!

Jalapeno:

What they say: “Dressed in the perfect amount of spice that anyone can appreciate, this popcorn is packed with the authentic, bold, zest of jalapeno flavor.”

What I say: delectable combination of white cheddar cheese with a surprising light kick of spicy jalapeno.  Not too hot, so even if you are not a fan of spice, and I am not, you will get a kick out of this flavor!

Butter:

What they say: “Crunchy and salty, exploding with buttery flavor.”

What I say: just like how popcorn at the movies should be, without that over-loaded greasy, fake buttery taste!  Instead this popcorn is lightly coated in butter and salt for a fresh, butter flavor. Yummy!

Southwest Cheddar:

What they say: “Inspired by the rich red chili flavor of the Southwest.  Fiery hot and deliciously flavorful at the same time.”

What I say:  the first bite is cheddar-y cheesy bliss, then comes the spice hot on the heels of a slight hint of lime. Where’s my water?

Naked:

What the say: “Our white popcorn is popped to crunchy, fluffy kernels and delicately dusted with salt.”

What I say: the perfect amount of salt lightly sprinkled on their fluffy, delicious kernels. Who knew nakedness was such a good thing?

Their popcorn is sold by the case, and they also offer decorative tins and other cute gift ideas. Give it a try and find your favorite flavor, but I bet you can’t just pick one!
