Buying a car can be super exciting! If it’s your first car, you’ll be looking forward to getting out on the road. If you’ve already had a couple of vehicles, you’ll surely be excited about an upgrade! But don’t get too carried away. There is still plenty of important stuff to remember to ensure that your car is well looked after once it is yours. Not sure what you need to do? Here are five things to remember when buying a car.
Should I Buy New Or Used?
The first question to ask yourself when buying a car is do you want to buy new or used? One of the main factors in people’s decisions is their budget. New cars tend to be a lot more expensive. However, you can be sure that there will be no faults with a new car. If there are any issues, you will be able to return it to your car dealership.
If you buy a second-hand car, make sure it comes from a reputable car dealer. Some dealerships, such as Genesis of North Atlanta, also offer certified pre-owned programs where the vehicles have been inspected, refurbished, and certified by a manufacturer or other certifying authority. Once certified they often come with an extended warranty, special financing, and additional benefits.
Insurance
Car insurance is a legal requirement. It is there to keep both you and your vehicle safe. Even if you are a fantastic driver, you can’t be sure of other drivers. Most states require that you have insurance on the new vehicle before you can drive it off the lot.
Before you commit to a certain policy, do your research first. Compare prices and options. This way, you’ll find the best rate on car insurance and type of policy that is best for you.
Registration
Once you have possession of the car, registration should be your next step. In some states, you can take care of the entire process right there at the dealership. In others, you will have to go to your local Department of Motor vehicles.
Be prepared to pay up to several hundred dollars depending on the value of the car. You will want to have either the title or the loan documents if you financed the car. You will also need to show your ID, proof of address, proof of insurance, and in most states a completed emissions test, and/or a vehicle inspection report.
Car Maintenance
If you want to keep your car in top condition, you should make sure it is regularly checked over by a garage. A well-maintained car is also a safe car! If you aren’t sure how to take care of your car, speak to your local garage. They can check it out for you and also advise you on proper vehicle care. The dealership from which you bought the car can also help you determine the best service schedule.
Keep It Looking New
Last, but not least, take pride in your new car and keep it looking new. While regular maintenance can keep your car running like new, regular washing and general car care can help keep it looking new.
Get in the habit of washing your car every other week, if you can. Wash the body, hose out the fender wells and undercarriage to remove dirt and road salt and apply a coat of wax. Keep the interior clean as well. If you can park in a garage to avoid the elements, do so. If you must park outside, consider a car cover or at least opt for the shade.
In Conclusion
Remember, a car is one of the most expensive investments you will make. Take care of your investment, and in return it will take care of your needs.
Happy driving!
