I am always thinking of cute things to give my friends and family on holidays, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Last year, I made these Heart-Shaped Red Velvet Whoopie Pies with a printable treat bag topper for my friends and family.

And for my husband, I created this super cute DIY Valentine’s Day Mug that I filled with Hershey’s Kisses. This year, everyone will be getting some homemade hot cocoa bombs! And perhaps (wink, wink) another cute DIY mug, too (check back in a few days and see)!

WHAT IS A HOT COCOA BOMB?

Hot cocoa bombs or hot chocolate bombs are currently all the rage! They are these cute little balls of chocolate that are filled with hot cocoa mix (and sometimes other add-ins) that you put into a mug to make hot cocoa.

When you pour hot milk or water into the mug, the chocolate ball melts (or explodes) and magically releases the cocoa and marshmallows hiding inside. The result is a mug full of rich, chocolatey hot cocoa. YUM!

XOXO HOT COCOA BOMB RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS

With a little practice and the right ingredients and tools, making these delectable homemade hot chocolate bombs is easier than you think!

Step One: Melt the Chocolate

  • Place the melting waters in a microwave-safe bowl and melt according to package directions. I usually melt them in 15-second increments, stirring in between, until smooth and creamy.
  • Set the silicone molds on a baking sheet.

Step Two: Fill the Molds

  • Stir the chocolate well, then pour up to 1 tablespoon of the melted chocolate into the well of the mold.
  • Using a food-safe paintbrush or the back of a spoon push the chocolate up the sides and evenly coat the mold. Make sure the chocolate goes all the way up the sides of the mold.
  • Repeat for all molds.

Step Three: Freeze

  • Leave the molds on the cookie sheet and place them in the refrigerator to set for about 30 minutes (or 10 in the freezer).
  • Once set, remove molds from the fridge and check for any thin spots. If any parts of the chocolate half-spheres look thin, add a second layer of chocolate using a small spatula, spoon, or food-safe paintbrush, and return to the fridge to set.
  • if you want thicker bombs repeat steps two and three 2 to 3 times.

Step Four: Assemble and Seal

  • Once the chocolate has hardened, gently and carefully remove the half-spheres of chocolate from the molds and then place them on another cold, parchment paper-lined baking sheet. I find it easiest to remove them by flipping the mold upside down and then slowly and gently peeling the mold off of the hardened chocolate sphere.
  • To seal the Valentine’s Hot Cocoa Bombs, you’ll need to melt the rims of the halves a tad. First, heat a skillet, saucepan, or plate just until warm, then remove it from the heat. *I found a skillet works best as it holds the heat longer.
  • Now take one of the chocolate shell halves and place it open-side-down on the warm surface just until the edges begin to soften and melt.
  • Then place the shell with the softened edge (open side up) back on the cold baking sheet and fill with 1 – 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix, sprinkles, and some mini marshmallows.
  • Warm another chocolate shell half on the hot surface, and then working quickly place it on top of the filled shell. The melted edges will act as glue sealing the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb together.
  • Use your finger, the back of a spoon, or paintbrush to smooth the seam and fill in any cracks or uneven edges.
  • Repeat, until all hot cocoa bombs are done, and then return them all to the refrigerator for another 15 to 30 minutes to allow chocolate to completely set.

Pro Tip: When sealing the edges, your warm fingers will begin to melt the chocolate. So the faster you work, the less likely melting will occur. Also, keep the shells away from the heated surface when not working with it.

These XOXO Valentine's Day Hot Cocoa Bombs are so much fun to make and even more fun to enjoy! They might look complicated, but with a little practice and the right ingredients and tools, making them is easier than you think!

Step Five: Decorate

  • Once completely set, remove the hot cocoa bombs from the refrigerator, and place them on the counter.
  • Next, using the white icing like glue, attach the XOXO candies to the top of cocoa bombs. Then allow the icing to completely dry before serving or storing.

HOW TO USE HOT COCOA BOMBS

Now for the best part, it’s time to to put your homemade hot cocoa bombs to the test!

  • Heat a glass of milk on the stovetop or microwave. You want it hot, but not boiling.
  • Then carefully ‘drop’ a hot cocoa bomb into the glass and watch it melt away and release the cocoa mix, sprinkles, and marshmallows. Technically you should ‘place’ one in the milk to avoid getting splashed, but it sounded better to say ‘drop’ since this is a recipe for a hot cocoa ‘bomb’. 🙂
  • Stir to combine.
  • Allow to cool slightly and enjoy!

You can always add a second cocoa bomb is you prefer a richer mug of hot chocolate!

HOW LONG DOES IT REALLY TAKE TO MAKE XOXO HOT COCOA BOMBS?

The amount of time this XOXO Valentine’s Hot Cocoa Bomb recipe takes varies. On average, I’d say it takes maybe an hour from start to finish. However, a large percentage of that is waiting for the chocolate to set.

Of course, the more familiar you become with assembling the hot chocolate bombs, the less amount of time it will take. If this is your first time making hot cocoa bombs, it’ll most likely take you longer.

Here’s a general breakdown:

  • About 5 minutes of prep time.
  • 5 – 10 minutes to melt the white chocolate, and pour it into the molds.
  • Around 20 – 30 minutes for the chocolate balls to harden.
  • 10 minutes to melt the edges of the chocolate balls, fill with goodies, and seal them together.
  • Then, an additional 20 – 30 minutes to fully harden in the refrigerator and then drizzle with icing and attach the XOXO candies.

HOW DO I STORE XOXO HOT COCOA BOMBS?

You can store the finished XOXO Valentine’s Hot Cocoa Bombs in an airtight container or bag in a cool, dry location for up to two weeks. I usually store mine in the fridge to avoid the possibility of melting.

These super cute homemade hot cocoa bombs are fun to make and to drink. Plus they make a great Valentine's or Galentine's gift!

CAN YOU FREEZE HOT COCOA BOMBS?

Yes, you can freeze them! When stored properly, they can last for up to 2 months.

To help them keep their shape, loosely wrap each one with parchment paper and then place inside an airtight container before freezing.

Then, once you are ready to use them, simply drop one into a mug and then pour hot milk over it.

CAN I MAKE XOXO HOT COCOA BOMBS AHEAD OF TIME?

Absolutely! Simply store them in an airtight container in your refrigerator or freezer. Then, when you’re ready to use them, just drop one (or two) into a mug filled with hot milk.

Homemade XOXO Valentines Hot Cocoa Bombs recipe

Homemade white chocolate spheres filled with hot cocoa mix, sprinkles, and mini marshmallows, then decorated with XOXO candies. These XOXO Valentines Hot Cocoa Bombs are the bomb!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Cooling Time 40 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 10 oz white melting chocolate wafers, Ghirardelli
  • 6 tbsp hot cocoa mix, store-bought or homemade
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • ⅓ cup candy sprinkles, Valentine's Day colors
  • 1 package XOXO candy
  • 1 tube cookie icing, white

FOR SERVING

  • 6 cups hot milk

Instructions

TO MAKE HOT COCOA BOMBS

  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate according to package instructions. Stir until smooth.
  2. Set the silicone mold on a baking sheet or something similar that will support it and can be placed into the fridge.
  3. Pour about ½ to 1 tablespoon of melted chocolate into the well of the silicone mold. Using a food-safe paintbrush or the back of a spoon push the chocolate up the sides and evenly coat the mold. Make sure the chocolate goes all the way up the sides of the mold. Repeat for all molds.
  4. Transfer the molds on the baking sheet to the refrigerator for about 30 minutes (or 10 in the freezer) until chocolate sets.
  5. Once set, remove from the fridge and check for any thin spots. If you see any, add a second layer of chocolate, and return to the fridge to set.
  6. Once the chocolate has hardened, carefully remove the candy from the molds. Place them on a cool baking sheet (you can use the same one that they were originally on if you want).
  7. Heat a small skillet until it is just warm. Take one of the chocolate shell halves and place it open-side-down (round end facing up) on the warm surface, just until the edges begin to melt and soften. Keep your other shells away from the heat as they can melt quickly.
  8. Now place that shell with the softened edge (open side up) back on the baking sheet and fill with 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix, sprinkles, and some mini marshmallows.
  9. Warm another chocolate shell half on the hot surface, and then, working quickly, place it on top of the filled shell. The melted edges will act as glue sealing the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb together.
  10. Use your finger, the back of a spoon, or paintbrush to smooth the seam and fill in any cracks or uneven edges.
  11. Repeat, until all hot cocoa bombs are done, and then return them all to the refrigerator for another 15 to 30 minutes to allow chocolate to completely set.
  12. Once set, use the cookie icing as glue to add the XOXO candy to the hot cocoa bomb.
  13. Allow the icing to completely dry before serving or storing the hot cocoa bombs.

TO SERVE

  1. Add a hot cocoa bomb to a mug filled with hot milk or water. As or after it melts, stir and enjoy!
