These tools will help make scaring up some fun a lot easier!
- Scissors (for cutting the licorice)
- Skewer or toothpick – optional -for poking holes for the legs.
Ingredients You Will Need
Here’s what you’ll need to make these spooky spider treats:
- Chocolate Ding Dongs (or any round chocolate snack cakes)
- Black licorice laces (for the legs)
- Candy eyes
- Cookie icing (to use as glue)
Step-by-Step Instructions to Make These Quick Halloween Party Snacks
Making these Halloween Spider Cakes is super easy! Here’s how you can whip them up:
Step 1: Prep Your Ding Dongs
Unwrap the Ding Dongs and place them on a clean surface. (This is where the fun begins!)
Step 2: Cut the Licorice
Use scissors to cut the black licorice into 8 pieces for each spider. (They need all 8 legs, after all!)
Step 3: Attach the Legs
Carefully insert 4 licorice legs into each side of the Ding Dong. You can gently press them into the chocolate or use a toothpick or skewer to form a hole first. I found it very easy to insert the licorice without having to first make a hole.
Step 4: Add the Eyes
Using a little bit of cookie icing as glue, stick two candy eyes on the top of each Ding Dong. The more crooked they are, the spookier they look!
Step 5: Let Them Set
Allow the icing to set for a few minutes, and your spiders are ready to serve! Aren’t they fantab – boo -lous!?
Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Not a fan of black licorice? Try using pretzel sticks for a salty twist!
- If the licorice legs won’t stay in place, use a toothpick to poke small holes before inserting the legs.
- Feel free to get creative—let the kids decorate their spiders with sprinkles or extra icing for a custom touch.
