Working with Fondant
Okay so you’ve probably noticed by now that these cupcakes are made with fondant. But don’t fear! Fondant may seem scary, but it really isn’t. I think it’s kind of like working with playdough. You simply roll it out flat, and then cut out shapes with a fondant knife or cookie cutter.
Once you get the hang of manipulating it, you’ll come out with the cutest creations! Like these hauntingly delicious Halloween Bat Twinkies, these adorable Finding Dory Waffle Bowls, and this beautiful Holiday Present Piñata Cake!

How to Make Halloween Ghost Cupcakes
Like I’ve said, making these Spooktacular Ghost Cupcakes is so easy it’s scary.
It takes about 25 minutes to make the cupcakes and the homemade frosting. Then the rest of the time is dedicated to putting the Halloween Ghost Cupcakes together.
Note: this recipe yields 12 decorated cupcakes. However, since most cake mixes make 24 cupcakes, I suggest cutting the recipe in half.

Halloween Ghost Cupcakes Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients to make these spookily simple Halloween cupcakes and the homemade icing. You can find everything you need either on Amazon or at Walmart.
For the Cupcakes:
- Chocolate cake mix + all the ingredients to make it**
For the Frosting:
- 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 tbsp milk
For the Decorations
- 1 – 2 oz. black fondant
- 6 – 8 oz. white fondant
Ghost Cupcake Instructions
Make the Cupcakes
- Preheat oven according to cake mix’s directions.
- Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and set aside.
- Prepare cupcake mix, fill tins, and bake according to the box’s recipe.
- Allow to cool completely before decorating.
Prepare the Icing
- In a medium-sized bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together butter, sugar and milk.
- Once the ingredients are well-incorporated and form semi-stiff peaks, the buttercream has formed.
Add a Peak of Frosting Center of Cupcakes
- Scoop buttercream into a piping bag, with a small slit cut at the bottom.
- Frost the center of each cupcake, forming a peak that’s about an inch high.
Make Fondant Ghosts
- Using a rolling pin, roll out the white fondant so that it’s about ¼ of an inch thick.
- Use a 3 inch circular cookie cutter to cut out 12 fondant circles.
- Then use rolling pin to roll out each fondant circle so that it’s about 4 ½ inches in diameter – the circle itself doesn’t have to be perfect.
- Drape one rolled-out fondant circle on top of the cupcake – it will fold and curve naturally, and that’s okay. The beauty of these cupcakes is that they don’t need to be uniform.
Add Ghost Eyes
- For each cupcake, roll out 2 small spheres from the black fondant. Flatten each one and give them an oval shape.
- Lightly brush water on the back of each black fondant piece.
- Stick two on each ghost – these will act as the cupcake ghost’s “eyes.”
And that’s it! Your hair-raising Halloween Ghost Cupcakes are finished! Aren’t they wickedly adorable?!
Happy Haunting!
