RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE HALLOWEEN HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS

chocolate skull mold

Halloween Skull-Shaped Hot Cocoa Bombs are so easy to make it’s scary. In just a few simple steps you can have a wickedly warm and delicious Halloween drink ready to enjoy.

STEP ONE: MELT THE CHOCOLATE

  • Place the Ghirardelli chocolate wafers in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30 to 40-second increments, stirring between each interval, until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.

STEP TWO: FILL THE MOLDS

  • Carefully fill each base piece of the molds (the ones with the facial features) to the fill lines with the melted chocolate.

  • Next, insert the flexible parts into each mold cavity…

…and then gently press down into the mold in order to cause the chocolate to fill the shape of the mold.

STEP THREE: ALLOW CHOCOLATE TO SET

  • Allow the chocolate in the molds to set completely. This usually takes about 2 to 3 hours. However, you can speed up the process by placing the chocolate filled molds in to the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, or in the freezer for around 15 minutes.

STEP FOUR: REMOVE CHOCOLATE FROM MOLDS

  • Once set, carefully pop out the molded chocolate skulls and place them onto a cookie sheet.

Repeat the above steps until all of the chocolate has been used.

STEP FIVE: ASSEMBLE THE SKULL COCOA BOMBS

  • Once all of the chocolate has been removed from the molds, add about 1 tablespoon of salted caramel hot cocoa mix and a few mini marshmallows into half of the chocolate skulls. The other half will be the tops.

STEP SIX: SEAL THE COCOA BOMBS

  • To seal the skull bombs, heat a small skillet until it is just warm. Take one of the empty skull halves and place it with the open side down on the warm surface for a few quick seconds – just until the edges begin to melt and soften. Remember to keep your other shells away from the heat as they can melt quickly.
  • Next, carefully place it on top of a filled half-skull and lightly press it into place to seal the skull. You can use your finger to smooth melted chocolate around the seam.
  • Repeat until all of the Halloween hot cocoa bombs are sealed.

Pro Tip: Wear gloves when handling the chocolate to avoid leaving fingerprints. Also, keep in mind that the warmth from your fingers will begin to melt the chocolate so work as quickly as you can to avoid too much melting.

STEP SEVEN: DECORATE HOT COCOA SKULL BOMBS

  • Once the hot cocoa bomb skulls are sealed and the chocolate is completely set, place one on a paper towel and then, using the cake spray, coat the skull on all sides.
  • Allow to dry completely before enjoying.

HOW TO USE THESE HALLOWEEN HOT COCOA BOMBS

Now it’s time to to put these homemade Halloween hot cocoa bombs to the test!

  • Heat a glass of milk on the stovetop or microwave until it is steaming hot, but not boiling.
  • Then carefully ‘drop’ a hot cocoa skull bomb into the glass and watch as it melts away and releases the cocoa mix and marshmallows. Okay, so technically you should carefully ‘place’ a hot cocoa bomb in the milk to avoid splashing, but it sounded better to say ‘drop’ since this is a hot cocoa ‘bomb’. 😉
  • Stir to combine the cocoa mix and milk.
  • Allow to cool slightly before enjoying.

HOW MUCH MILK DO YOU ADD TO A HOT COCOA BOMB?

How much milk you add to your hot cocoa bomb depends on your taste. I’ve found that one cup is the perfect amount to add to these cocoa bombs!

WHAT ELSE CAN I ADD TO THIS HALLOWEEN HOT COCOA BOMB RECIPE?

This fangtastic Halloween Hot Cocoa Bomb recipe is very versatile. You could use a homemade hot chocolate mix for an extra-special treat, or use a different flavored cocoa mix like vanilla. Try adding in a few chocolate candies or even some mini chocolate chips to the inside of the hot cocoa bombs. Mini caramel chips would work, too!

You could also fill them with coffee instead of hot cocoa like these Caramel Mocha Coffee Bombs.

For an adult-only version, add a shot of Bailey’s Irish Cream to the mug right after you add in the hot milk!
