How to get Started with Gel Balling

Gel balling is a competitive team combat sport, which involves the use of projectile-firing weapons. It is very similar to paintball, though the projectiles fired are a lot less painful upon impact, not to mention it’s much more affordable.

More and more people are dropping their paintball and airsoft guns and turning to gel balling, and it’s not hard to see why. The sport is much more affordable than either of the aforementioned ones.

This post will explore gel balling in more detail, explaining how you can get started, and everything you need to know about taking it up.

Finding a Venue

Where do you plan on going gel balling? To be honest, as long as you have a location that doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic, then you can gel ball there. The only downside to gel balling in public is that if the police catch you, you can be moved on or asked to surrender your weapons. Most experts would recommend going to an actual gel balling venue. One of the advantages of going to a venue is that you’ll meet lots of other people interested in the sport, and could even make friends.

Buying Weapon

The first thing you need to do if you want to take up gel balling is to buy a gel blaster. You can find a large selection of gel blasters online. The good thing about them is that they’re much more affordable than paintball guns or airguns, which makes them great for people who’re on a budget. It should be noted though, high-powered gel blasters can still be expensive. It might be worth buying a budget gun at first until you learn how to gel ball properly. An alternative to buying a gun is hiring one from a venue, which is a good idea if you’ll only be going gel balling occasionally.

Wearing Mask

Whenever you go gel balling, you need to make sure that you’re wearing a mask. Going gel balling without a mask could lead to you injuring yourself. If a gel ball was to go in your eyes, it could blind you. Most gel balling venues will require players to wear masks. If they do not have their own, then they will rent one to them. Renting a mask is not expensive but is an unnecessary expense. Having your own mask also means that you’ll be able to go gel balling with your friends in the woods or in a derelict building.

Head Protection

In addition to wearing a mask, you also need to wear head protection, like a helmet. Wearing a helmet will stop you from taking shots directly to the head. Helmets are not usually required by most gel balling venues but are a good idea. Alternatively, you can just wear a woolly hat or a baseball cap. As long as your head is covered, you should be okay. Even a woolly hat or baseball cap can give you a lot of protection from gel balls.

Long Pants

In addition to a mask and headgear, you should also wear long pants. Gel balls hurt significantly less than paintballs or airsoft pellets, but they still hurt if they hit bare skin. Again, most venues will advise wearing long pants, however, they are not compulsory.

If you do decide not to wear long pants, you will probably finish up with bruises all over your legs. It’s a good idea to wear a long-sleeved top, too. You do not need to wear a protective vest, however. Some people wear protective vests when playing airsoft or paintballing.

Wearing Layers

While a protective vest isn’t necessary, you might want to wear layers. Wearing layers will help to reduce the impact of the gel balls when they inevitably hit you. Wearing one or two sweaters under your top could be an effective way of protecting yourself. Bear in mind though, if it’s very hot outside then wearing too many layers could cause you to overheat. Be sure to bring water with you and to drink it periodically. It can be very exhausting gel balling. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion can be very dangerous.
