Pretzel Tree Instructions
Making these pretzel Christmas trees is as easy as melting the chocolate, drizzling it over pretzel sticks, and then decorating with the sprinkles.
Step 1: Lay Out Pretzels
Lay out the pretzel sticks on top of a piece of wax or parchment paper. I find it easiest to make one ‘tree’ at a time since the melted candy sets so quickly.
Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
Following the instructions on the back of the candy melts bag, melt the chocolate until it is smooth and creamy. You will then transfer the melted chocolate into a piping bag or snack bag. When you’re ready to start making your Christmas trees, snip off the tip of the piping bag or the corner of the snack bag.
Step 3: Drizzle the Chocolate
Working with one tree at a time, drizzle the melted candy in a zig zag pattern over the top of a pretzel stick. Start at the top and make the lines slightly larger as you move down the pretzel to create a triangle/Christmas tree shape.
Step 4: Decorate Pretzel Christmas Trees
Working quickly, decorate the ‘tree’ with the sprinkles. Since the melted candy sets quickly, it’s best to decorate your tree immediately after drizzling the chocolate over the top of the pretzel.
And that’s it. You’re done!
How cute are these?! Such a fun holiday treat for kids or to give as homemade gifts to friends and neighbors!
Pretzel Christmas Tree Treats Tips and Tricks
Here are a few tips and tricks to make this holiday treat recipe even easier.
Use a zip-top bag. Don’t purchase an icing piping bag if you don’t already have one. Just use a zip-top bag instead. After filling the bag with the melted chocolate, twist the top of the bag to secure the chocolate in place. Then, cut off one small one of the bag to drizzle the chocolate over the pretzels.
Place your bag in a wide mouth jar for easy pouring. It can be a bit messy/hard to fill a piping bag with hot melted chocolate while holding it in your hand. Here’s a simple trick to make it easier: put your bag in a wide-mouth glass or jar to hold it in place. Once the bag is in the jar, fold the top of the bag over the top of the jar. This will hold the bag in place while you easily pour in the melted chocolate. Once it’s full, simply pull the ends up off the jar and twist closed to use.
Only cut the very tip of the corner off the end of the bag. Keep in mind that the higher you cut the tip of the bag, the bigger the drizzle will be. Keep your trees from looking messy by snipping just the tip of the corner off the bag. This way your chocolate drizzle will be smaller and easier to control.
If making this with kids, let the adult take care of melting the chocolate. Working with melted chocolate is not only hot, it can be messy, too. Have an adult be in charge of melting the chocolate and drizzling it over the pretzels. The kids can then add the sprinkles and other decorations to the chocolate before it sets.
Chocolate Pretzel Christmas Tree Variations
Make Snow-Covered Trees. Get creative and make snow-covered Pretzel Christmas Trees by using white candy melts instead of green. Just be sure to get the Bright White melts.
Make Snow-Dusted Trees. Another snowy option is to make your trees lightly dusted with snow! To do this, simply sprinkle a light dusting of powdered sugar over the top of the trees after the chocolate sets.
Try different types of sprinkles and decorations. While I used Wilton sprinkles that look like Christmas lights, any type of festive holiday sprinkles would work perfectly with this easy recipe. For example, use nonpareils as tiny lights. Or skip the sprinkles and use different colors of melted chocolate instead. Make dots for ornaments and lines for tinsel!
Make big trees by using pretzel rods! Just make sure you double the amount of chocolate so you don’t run out.
Make them gluten-free. Use gluten free pretzel sticks to make a gluten free holiday treat.
