PEPPERMINT OREO POPS RECIPE

To make these chocolate covered Oreo pops with crushed peppermint, you simply melt some chocolate, insert a colorful straw, dip the oreos in the melted chocolate, then sprinkle with crushed peppermint. But first, as with my Thanksgiving Oreo Turkeys, you are going to twist the Oreo cookies apart.

That’s pretty much the hardest part of this recipe. It’s a quick and easy holiday treat to make.

Ready to make it? Let’s do it!

HOW DO YOU PUT LOLLIPOP STICKS IN OREOS?

There are two different ways that you can put lollipop sticks in Oreos. The first is to dip the tip of the lollipop stick (or paper straw in this recipe) in the melted chocolate and then carefully insert it into the Oreo. The chocolate will act as glue to continue to hold the cookie together.

The second way is to twist the Oreo apart, then dip the tip of the straw or stick in the melted chocolate, lightly press the stick into the Oreo filling, then place the other cookie back on top.

I chose to do it the second way because the chances of accidentally breaking the Oreo apart are a lot less. Use whichever way you find that works best for you.

HOW TO MAKE OREO POPS

These Oreo pops are so awesome and they make perfect gifts, or treats for after school, classroom parties, or treats for holiday gatherings.

To add a more festive touch, I choose to use decorative paper straws instead of lollipop sticks. I love the way they turned out!

KITCHEN TOOLS YOU MAY NEED

In order to make these incredible Oreo pops you will need just a handful of ingredients and tools.

PEPPERMINT CHOCOLATE-COVERED OREO POP RECIPE INGREDIENTS

You don’t need many ingredients to make these yummy chocolate covered Oreo pops. These cookie pops are made using a combination of the following simple ingredients:

  • Oreos – I recommend using either the Double Stuf or the Mega Stuf kind
  • white chocolate chips – use a good brand such as Ghirardelli
  • peppermint flavoring – OIL-based only, not alcohol-based peppermint extract
  • crushed peppermint candy

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

These Oreo Pops are very simple to make, but I do have a few tips to share with you to ensure they turn out perfectly.

Prep your ingredients in advance.

When making white chocolate covered Oreo pops or just regular chocolate covered Oreos, you will need to work quickly because the melted chocolate dries quickly, and if it is too dry, your crushed peppermint candy or other toppings won’t stick.

Be extra careful working with the cookies.

When you are taking apart the Oreo cookies, you want to be careful. Oreo cookies break easily, so do not rush when you are taking them apart. To be safe, and depending on how many you plan on making, you may want to purchase two packages so you have extras if needed.

Use parchment paper or silicone mats.

Use either parchment paper or a silicone mat so the chocolate-dipped Oreos do not stick to the surface while they dry.

Do not overheat the chocolate.

My rule of thumb is to heat it in 25 – 30 second increments in the microwave stirring well each time. I also heat mine at 50-60% power…low and slow is the way to go! If your melted chocolate is too thick, add a drop or two of canola oil or a small bit of shortening and mix well.

Help Oreo Pops Dry Faster.

Line baking sheets with parchment or wax paper (instead of your counter) and place each tray into the freezer once it’s full. This will help the treats set a lot quicker, usually within 10 to 15 minutes.

If Using Mint Flavoring, Use Oil-Based

Using mint flavoring in the chocolate really makes these Oreo Pops well, pop. However, make sure you use oil-based flavoring not alcohol-based extract.

HOW TO FLAVOR MELTED CHOCOLATE WITHOUT IT SEIZING?

If you have ever tried adding regular food coloring to melted chocolate then you know what a mess it will become. So how do you flavor plain melted chocolate without making it seize? Use an oil-based flavoring.

Also called “candy flavoring” or “chocolate flavoring,” an oil based flavoring can easily be added to melted chocolate without it seizing. Just be aware that oil-based flavorings are pretty potent—especially mint—so you won’t need but one or two drops.

Oil-based flavorings can easily be found online, at cake and candy supply stores, and sometimes even at large craft stores in the baking and candy aisle.

PEPPERMINT OREO POPS INSTRUCTIONS

Making these Peppermint Oreo Pops is extremely easy. You stick a straw or lollipop into an Oreo cookie, dip the cookie in melted chocolate, and then top with crushed peppermint. As easy as that!

If I can do it, then you can do it, too. So, let’s get started!

STEP ONE: PREP

  • Line a baking sheet with either a Silpat mat or parchment paper.
  • Crush the candy canes into tiny pieces.

STEP TWO: MELT A SMALL AMOUNT OF CHOCOLATE

  • Start by melting a small amount of the white chocolate chips in the microwave in 25 – 30 second increments, stirring between each interval. Use high heat for 25 seconds, then stir, then 25 seconds, then stir, until completely melted. I also find the defrost setting works really well, in 40 to 45-second increments.
  • You could also use a double boiler or candy melting pot.

STEP THREE: SEPARATE THE OREOS

  • While the chocolate is melting, very carefully twist the tops off of all the Oreo’s and then set all of them on the prepared cookie sheets. Don’t over crowd them, because you do not want them touching each other when you put them back on the silicon mat once they’ve been dipped.
flatten the end of the straw

STEP FOUR: ADD THE STRAWS (OR LOLLIPOP STICKS)

  • Once the chocolate is fully melted, flatten one end of a paper straw and dip the flattened end in the melted chocolate. Lightly press the straw into the Oreo filling, then place the other cookie back on top. Repeat with all the Oreo cookies.
  • Allow the chocolate to set before moving on to the next step. I place in mine in the fridge for around 10 minutes to quicken the process. Some may take longer to set depending on the chocolate/candy coating you are using.

STEP FIVE: MELT AND FLAVOR REMAINING CHOCOLATE

  • Using the same steps as above, melt the remaining chocolate.
  • Once melted, add in 1 to 2 drops of the peppermint oil to the melted chocolate. Remember it is very potent.

STEP SIX: DUNK COOKIES IN CHOCOLATE

  • Dip each cookie in the melted chocolate, making sure each side is fully coated.
  • If using a glass, hold the dipped cookie over the chocolate to allow the excess to drip off. You can also lightly and carefully tap the stick on the side of the glass to get rid of the excess candy.
  • If using a bowl, lift the cookie out of the melted chocolate with a fork and lightly tap the handle of the fork on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate from the cookie.
dip the Oreos in white chocolate then remvoe with a fork

STEP SEVEN: TOP WITH PEPPERMINT CANDY

  • Transfer the chocolate covered Oreo to the parchment or wax paper covered tray and immediately sprinkle with the crushed peppermint candy on one side.

STEP EIGHT: ALLOW TO SET

  • To quicken the process, place in the fridge or freezer.

SUBSTITUTIONS AND ADDITIONS

SUBSTITUTIONS: while I used original chocolate Oreos, you could always make these Peppermint Chocolate Covered Oreo Pops with Golden Oreos. Just make sure to only pick up the Double Stuf Oreos as you need the extra icing to have room for the straw/stick.

ADDITIONS: add some extra wow by using different chocolate colors. You could use dark chocolate to dip instead of white. Or you could color the white chocolate red and green for Christmas or Blue for Hanukkah. You could also drizzle different colored chocolates across the white chocolate coating making swirls or zigzags.

TOPPINGS – add additional or different toppings. Try adding colored sprinkles or gold and silver candy balls. Or you could use other types of crushed candy.

HOW LONG DO OREO POPS LAST?

Peppermint Oreo Pops can last for up to two or three weeks if they are stored correctly.

HOW TO STORE PEPPERMINT OREO POPS

Be sure to store them in an air tight container. I prefer to store mine in the fridge, then either eat them cold or let them come to room tep before eating.

MAKING OREO POP PARTY FAVORS OR GIFTS

These make great gifts and party favors! Once the chocolate has completely dried, place a small cellophane treat bag over the top of each Oreo pop, then tie the base with a colorful ribbon.
