Ask a Neighbor To Help Out

If you have friends and neighbors close by that will be around, then recruit their help. If they can take your mail in from the mailbox and generally check on things in the house, it will help a lot. If you live in an area that snows, it might just need them to shovel the snow on your driveway or walk up to your home. If the snow is untouched, then it is obvious to everyone that nobody’s home. A few small things like this from a neighbor can help massively as a deterrent.

Consider Technology To Help

If you are able to, then installing something like CCTV would help a lot. You could have it positioned at the entrances of your home, to check for intruders. There are a lot of apps and devices nowadays that mean you can see from the camera from your phone. So you can watch for anything suspicious when you are away. You could also get timers for the lights in your home. You can get timers that you set, or look for ones that you can activate. These things might cost a little bit to start with, but can be a really worthwhile investment.

Don’t Let Everyone Know

If you are going to be out of the country for two weeks, don’t share it with everyone you know on Facebook! You need to especially check your privacy settings too. Otherwise, if people get word that you are out of the country, not many deterrents will put them off. So only tell people that you know and trust. It is also a good idea to be careful about what you say on your voicemail too. Don’t say you’re away and will call them back in two weeks. Just that you can’t come to the phone right now.

Keep Things Looking Normal

One thing that people are unsure of when they go away is leaving the curtains closed or open. You want to make things look as normal as possible. So if you normally have your curtains open, then they should still be quite open. Having them closed for two weeks can set off suspicion for many.

Keep Your Heating Running

In order to avoid any disasters when you get home from your trip, keep your heating running. Just set it to come on each day, but only for around thirty minutes each time. Then you won’t come back to frozen or burst pipes, which can be a disaster, causing lots of damage.
