In my last Green Virgin Products review I told you about this awesome non-toxic and eco-friendly product called Formula 433 All Purpose Cleaner and Degreaser. Today, I want to share with you two more of their products that are geared towards laundry, the Green Virgin Products Formula 433 Solid Pre-spotter and their organic Soap Nuts.

All Your Laundry Needs Formula 433 Pre-spotter and Soap Nuts

Like all of GVP’s products, these are not only eco-friendly, but the are also completely non-toxic, a property many eco-friendly products cannot claim.

Formula 433 Solid Pre-Spotter

Just like its liquid counterpart, the Formula 433 Solid Pre-Spotter is made with all-natural and non-toxic ingredients.  In fact, it actually contains Formula 433 Cleaner Degreaser Concentrate in addition to palm kernel oil, baking soda, coconut oil and sodium hydroxide.

It looks like a common bar of soap and has the most wonderful fresh scent that is slightly reminiscent of pine needles.  It can be used to remove stains from fabrics such as clothes, towels and sheets, and can even remove carpet stains.

All you have to do is wet the bar, rub it on something like an old toothbrush then scrub the stain with the brush and watch it disappear!

I have also used it on the carpet where some juice was spilled, and you cannot even tell there was a stain there.  It does not fade or bleach out colors, and there is no harsh chemical smell like with many other stain removers.  I really like it!

Green Virgin Products Soap Nuts

Another item I tried were GVP’s Soap Nuts, a totally organic, non toxic and chemical free laundry detergent and fabric softener.  Soap Nuts are actually the fruit of a tree known as the Chinese Soap Berry Tree which are usually found in the Himalayas.

The fruits are harvested and laid in the sun too dry, after which they are cracked open and a large seed is removed.  It is the outer shell which contains the natural soap known as saponin.  Like apples, there are many varieties of soap nuts.

This variety, Sapindus Mukorossi, from Northern India and Nepal, has the largest soap nuts with the highest saponin content found.

The benefits of using soap nuts as opposed to other detergents are many.  Not only are they totally organic, non toxic and chemical free, but they are non-polluting and actually clean gray water.  Soap Nuts are antimicrobial and insecticidal, they are hypoallergenic and perfect for those with sensitive skin.

They cost much less than the leading detergent brands, they weigh less and are easier to use, and they soften clothes better than fabric softeners and instead of covering up odors, they completely remove them.

This is actually the very first I have ever heard or used soap nuts, and I couldn’t believe how many uses, aside from laundry, they have!  They can be mixed with water and used as a car wash, or you can even make a concentrated liquid soap with a variety of uses such as an all-purpose household cleaner, or a pet or human shampoo that actually prevents dandruff and kills head lice and their eggs!

So far, I have just used it as a laundry detergent and fabric softener which I am totally addicted to using now!

The soap nuts come in completely biodegradable packaging with another smaller bag for use in the wash and enough soap nuts for at least 83 wash loads!  All you do is place 4 to 6 nuts in the smaller included wash bag and throw them in the washer with your dirty clothes.  You do not add any other detergent or fabric softener.  If you have very tough stains, use the pre-spotter before putting the stained item in the wash.  Instead of bleach, brighten your whites even more by adding hydrogen peroxide.

It is recommended that you break the seeds in half before putting them in the wash bag, and they work well in any temperature and can be re-used between 4 and 7 times!   A test you can do to see if the soap nuts are used up is to take one of the used nuts and put it in a jar with a lid.  Add water and shake the jar, if you get suds, they are still good.

I was amazed at the results.  Not only did the clothes come out looking and smelling clean and fresh, but they feel incredibly soft, too.  One of my initial concerns was whether or not any fading of colors would occur, but after many washes, all of our colored clothes remain as bright as the day they were purchased.

My second concern was sensitivity.  I have very sensitive skin that does not like certain detergents but using the soap nuts has not caused any issues at all!  I love how easy soap nuts are to use, and the fact that they save us so much money.  I would definitely recommend these to anyone!

Final Thoughts

Both the Formula 433 pre-spotter and the Soap Nuts can be purchased through the green Virgin Products website.  A 5oz bar of the Pre-spotter will cost $6.95.  The soap nuts are available in three sizes and range in price from $10.95 to $27.95, a steal when you consider not only the amount of uses, but the benefits too!
