Making these fun Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Sundaes couldn’t be easier or quicker. In less than 10 minutes you can have them ready to go!
STEP ONE: CRUSH COOKIES
- Place the cookies in a sandwich bag and then seal it pressing to remove any excess air.
- Using either a rolling pan or a glass, crush the Oreos until they are in small pieces. Be careful not to overdo it. You don’t want them in powder form.
STEP TWO: ADD ICE CREAM
- Begin making your sundae by adding two to three scoops of Cookies and Cream ice cream to a bowl.
STEP THREE: TOP WITH SYRUP
- Next, drizzle the chocolate syrup over the top of the ice cream, letting it run down the sides.
STEP FOUR: SPRINKLE WITH CRUSHED COOKIES
- Then take a spoonful of the crushed cookies (about 2 cookies worth) and sprinkle them on top of the chocolate syrup-covered ice cream.
STEP FIVE: ADD GUMMY WORMS
- Lastly, top the sundae with a few colorful gummy worms.
Add a spoon and that’s it! Your delectable dirt and worms ice cream sundae is ready to be devoured! Doesn’t it look delicious?
In conclusion, the Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Sundae is a classic dessert that’s perfect for any occasion. It’s easy to make, delicious, and fun for all ages. CAN YOU MAKE DIRT AND WORMS ICE CREAM SUNDAES AHEAD OF TIME?
Yes, you can make dirt and worms sundaes ahead of time. These delicious ice cream sundaes can be assembled up to 5 days in advance.
To do so, make the sundaes in their bowls or cups, but leave off the chocolate syrup and the gummy worms until you are ready to serve them. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap before placing them in the freezer. Make sure they are airtight!
When you are ready to eat, remove the sundaes from the freezer about 5 minutes before serving time. Then go ahead and add the chocolate syrup and the gummy worms.
LEFTOVERS can be stored in the same manner as long as they are in an airtight container and the gummy worms have been removed.
CAN I MAKE ENOUGH FOR A CROWD?
Yes! I would use a 9 by 13 glass dish then I would estimate that you need to either triple or quadruple the recipe to have enough for a birthday party or other gathering. Remember to leave the worms out until you are ready to serve as cold gummy worms are hard to bite into!
SUBSTITUTIONS, ADDITIONS, AND VARIATIONS
Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Sundae is a fun dessert that is typically made with chocolate ice cream, crushed cookies, and gummy worms. While I took the liberty to use cookies and cream ice cream instead of chocolate, there are all sorts of other variations that you could try. Below are a few of my favorites.
Homemade Ice Cream or Cookie Crumbs: Feeling creative? Make your own homemade ice cream or your own homemade cookies to use in this Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Sundae! These Double Chocolate Chip Cookies or these Vanilla Butter Cookies would be SO good in it!
Peanut Butter Dirt and Worms Sundae: Instead of using chocolate ice cream, try using peanut butter ice cream. You can also add crushed peanut butter cookies or peanut butter cups.
Rainbow Dirt and Worms Sundae: Create a colorful rainbow sundae by using vanilla ice cream or rainbow sherbet and vanilla Oreos for the dirt. In addition to the different colored gummy worms, further create a rainbow effect by topping it off with some rainbow sprinkles on top.
Mint Dirt and Worms Sundae: Use mint chocolate chip ice cream instead of cookies and cream ice cream, and add some crushed Chocolate Mint Oreos or another kind of chocolate mint cookie to create a minty dirt effect. If you can’t find mint chocolate cookies, use regular Oreos with a few drops of peppermint flavoring (or just green food coloring) added in while crushing the cookies.
S’mores Dirt and Worms Sundae: Use chocolate ice cream, crushed graham crackers, and marshmallow topping instead of gummy worms to create a s’mores-inspired sundae.
Fruit Dirt and Worms Sundae: Swap out the chocolate ice cream for vanilla ice cream and use fresh fruit, such as strawberries or raspberries, instead of the gummy worms. Add some crushed graham crackers or granola for the “dirt” effect.
Vegan Dirt and Worms Sundae: Use dairy-free ice cream and vegan gummy worms to create a vegan-friendly version of this tasty classic sundae.
Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Cake: turn this treat into a cake! See how below!
You can also get creative with your ingredients and toppings and create your own personalized version of this fun and tasty dessert!
Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Sundae Cake
Planning to serve Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Sundaes at a party, why not turn them into a cake, instead? I cannot provide the exact ingredient amounts as I have never made a large cake, only a smaller one. However, it’s easy to estimate how much you will need depending on the number of kids at the party.
To make the cake, you will first line a pan with parchment paper, and then firmly press a layer of Oreo crumbs into the bottom of the pan. Next, add a fair-sized layer of softened cookies and cream ice cream and spread it evenly over the cookie crumb crust.
Top the ice cream by sprinkling another layer of crushed cookies, then top those with a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Hold off on the gummy worms for now as they get quite hard in the freezer..
Place the dirt and worms ice cream sundae cake in the freezer to set. I recommend letting it set overnight. Remove the Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Sundae Cake about 5 to 10 minutes before serving, giving time for it to soften just a bit. This is also when you will want to add the gummy worms.
Now you are ready to slice, serve, and enjoy!
Pro Tip: if you want to remove the cake from the pan and put it on a platter, carefully lift it using the parchment paper and remove it from the pan.
